Work Incentives Transition Network: Collaborators

    VCU-RRTC Social Security Information Project:
    Promoting the Utilization of Work Incentives Through Transition Planning

    The Virginia Commonwealth University-Rehabilitation Research and Training Center's Social Security Information Project is designed to determine whether a coordinated program of information sharing and education, based on content developed by a cadre of national experts and targeted toward students and their families, school personnel, and adult agency staff members (including local SSA personnel) can:
    • increase the number of potentially eligible SSI recipients who apply for and are determined eligible for SSI benefits;
    • increase the number of SSI beneficiaries who are employed; and
    • increase the number of SSI beneficiaries who are aware of and utilize Social Security work incentives.
    State transition programs in five states - California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, and Virginia are participating in project activities. These states represent 20 collaborating school divisions. In each participating state, staff from the State Education Agency or the Transition Systems Change project will facilitate teams of project staff members and local school district personnel that will:
    (1) carefully examine barriers to employment for young adults receiving SSI benefits,
    (2) coordinate local training and technical assistance efforts, and
    (3) monitor the results of training activities on transition planning and work incentive utilization. Training opportunities available to a national audience include Satellite Teleconferencing and Internet Courses.
